NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, Girl with the green eyes
Nominated by Paul Thomas:
I was lucky enough to be introduced to National Geographic when I was at school and have always interested in science and the world around us. I was 19 when I saw this cover and the world was a very different place, Ronald Regan had just taken up his 2nd term and Gorbachev had just become general secretary of the Soviet Union the cold war was still raging. Bob Geldof also launched Live Aid to highlight the tragedy happening in Ethiopia, Somehow this picture seemed to capture everything going on in the world at that time. The Afghan war with Russia was at it height when her picture was taken at a refugee camp. Her eyes are sea green, they draw you in to look deeper, almost into her soul, they are both haunted and haunting. In them you can read the tragedy of a land drained by war, but there is a glint of defiance that captures the human spirit in times of hardship.
